The Works was the eleventh studio album by Queen, being released in February 1984. The album is a partial return to their rock roots, but with a much lighter approach. The record features the heaviest electronics amongst all albums produced by the band. In comparison, the band's previous album Hot Space was mostly absent in rock, utilising more dance and funk with the use of analogue synths and brass. The Works is estimated to have sold ten million copies worldwide.

The album was recorded at Record Plant Studios and Musicland Studios between August 1983 and January 1984. The title of the album comes from a comment drummer Roger Taylor made when recording began – "Let's give them the works!". This was the first Queen album to be released on CD (Compact Disc).
